Cracked Alloy Wheel Repair in Manchester

If your alloy has a crack or a buckle, that’s a safety problem, not a looks problem — and that’s exactly what we deal with. At Manchester Alloys in Crumpsall we carry out structural repair by welding: we weld cracks and straighten buckled rims so the wheel is safe to hold air and hold the road again. To be clear from the start — this is a structural, safety-led service, not cosmetic refurbishment. We do not do diamond-cutting, powder-coating, re-painting or kerb-rash tidy-ups. If your wheel is just scuffed and structurally sound, we’ll tell you honestly that you don’t need us. Where we help is when a wheel is cracked or bent and the question is: can this be saved safely, or does it need replacing?

What we do — and what we don’t

We keep the scope deliberately narrow, because that’s where safety lives:

  • We DO weld structural cracks where the crack is in a location and size that can be repaired soundly.
  • We DO straighten buckled rims — the flat-spots and bends that cause vibration and slow air loss after a pothole or hard kerb.
  • We DO confirm a correctly-fitting replacement if the wheel can’t safely be saved, using our vehicle selector to match the right size for your exact car.
  • We DON’T do cosmetic refurbishment — no diamond-cut, no powder-coating, no re-spraying, no kerb-scuff cosmetics. For purely cosmetic damage we’d recommend living with it or replacing the wheel.

When a wheel can be welded — and when it must be replaced

Not every cracked alloy can or should be repaired, and we won’t pretend otherwise. As a guide:

  • Often repairable: a single crack in the rim flange or barrel away from critical load areas, or a buckle that hasn’t fatigued the metal too far.
  • Usually not repairable — replace instead: cracks through the spokes or hub face, multiple cracks, a crack that’s already been welded once and failed, severe corrosion, or a wheel bent so badly the metal is fatigued.

We assess each wheel on its merits. If welding it would leave any doubt about safety, we’ll tell you it needs replacing — we’d rather lose the repair than put a wheel back on a car we wouldn’t drive ourselves.

The safety and MOT angle

A cracked or badly buckled alloy isn’t just an MOT risk — it’s a genuine hazard. A crack can let air out slowly or suddenly, and a buckle throws the wheel out of true, causing vibration, uneven tyre wear and unpredictable handling. A structural defect can be an MOT failure and, worse, can fail at speed. Welding a crack properly — or replacing the wheel when it can’t be saved — is about keeping you and the car on the road safely. That’s the whole reason we offer it: getting structural defects sorted, not ignored.

How it works at our Crumpsall workshop

  • Bring the wheel (or the car) to 2 Middleton Road. Call first on 0161 399 4859 so we know what’s coming.
  • We inspect the damage and give you an honest verdict: weldable, or replace.
  • If it’s weldable, we weld the crack or straighten the buckle, then check it holds true and holds air.
  • If it can’t be saved, the vehicle selector confirms a correctly-fitting replacement — right PCD, offset and centre bore — and we fit it, often same day on stocked sizes.

Why local drivers trust us with structural repairs

Because we’ll give you the honest answer, not the one that bills the most. Some places will weld anything and send you on your way; we’ll only weld a wheel we’d be happy to drive on. And because we’re a full alloy wheel shop — stocking OZ Racing, MSW by OZ, Sparco, Riviera, GMP Italia, Velare, CMS, Romac, JBW and Antera — if your wheel genuinely can’t be saved, we can put a correct, confirmed-fitment replacement on the car straight away. One workshop, one trip, sorted.

Frequently asked questions

Do you refurbish or diamond-cut alloys as well?

No. We do structural repair only — welding cracks and straightening buckles for safety. We do not do cosmetic refurbishment, diamond-cutting, powder-coating or re-painting. For cosmetic damage we’d recommend replacement rather than a cosmetic respray.

Can every cracked alloy be welded?

No — and we won’t pretend it can. Cracks through the spokes or hub face, multiple cracks, previously-failed repairs and badly fatigued metal usually mean the wheel must be replaced. We assess each wheel and give you an honest verdict.

Is a cracked or buckled alloy an MOT failure?

A structural defect like a crack or significant buckle can fail an MOT and, more importantly, is a real safety risk — air loss, vibration and unpredictable handling. It’s worth getting it assessed rather than driving on it.

What happens if my wheel can’t be saved?

We’ll confirm a correctly-fitting replacement using the vehicle selector — matched to your exact car — and fit it for you, often the same day on stocked sizes. You leave with a wheel that’s safe, not a compromise.

Get your wheel assessed

If you’ve cracked or buckled an alloy, call the Crumpsall workshop on 0161 399 4859 and we’ll tell you honestly whether it can be welded or needs replacing. If it needs replacing, start with the vehicle selector to confirm fitment, then browse alloys or a complete wheel & tyre package. Looking locally? See alloy wheels near me in Manchester.
